Learn about Biodiesel Conversion today

Biodiesel is one of the many types of alternative fuel that are used by many drivers today. They are becoming more popular because of the many advantages that they offer as compared to the traditional diesel fuel that are commonly used in many types of vehicles. They are more environment – friendly because they produce lesser amounts of air pollutants. This type of alternative fuel is biodegradable and non – toxic so they do not have the tendency to contaminate any part of our surroundings. Biodiesel is also renewable since they come from sources that have the very high possibility of not disappearing sooner or later. All of these advantages are the reasons why more and more people are buying already processed biodiesel fuel or doing their own biodiesel conversion at home.
Actually the idea of biodiesel is not new. This is because of the fact that the first type of diesel fuel is derived from oil extracted from peanuts. However, the diesel that is derived from petroleum is the one that became more popular mainly because of the wide availability of this natural fuel source in the past. Now, the dwindling supply of petroleum in the world has made many people look for other alternative ways to fuel their machines. One of these as is said earlier is biodiesel.
What is biodiesel anyway? Although it is a very common term nowadays, many are still not aware of this alternative fuel. Biodiesel is a type of fuel that is derived from animal fats, vegetable oil, and used or waste cooking oil. Biodiesel conversion is done through the process known as transesterification. This involves mixing the oils or fats with a specific type of alcohol, for example methanol, and a catalyst for the reaction which in this case is sodium hydroxide. Two compounds are the produced and these are glycerine and biodiesel. However, this is only just one method of biodiesel conversion, although it is the most common one, which is used in the creation of the alternative fuel known as biodiesel.
Biodiesel fuel can then be used in its pure form or is combined together with conventional diesel fuel. All of these can then be used in most cars especially those who are late models without doing any modifications or alterations in the engine. However, anyone who is planning to try any variety of biodiesel is first advised to ask their car manufacturer or dealer. This is to make sure if their vehicle can really run on biodiesel or not. Also, under no circumstances should a person use any raw oil or anything that has not been subject to biodiesel conversion as this can definitely damage the engine of their vehicle.
In spite of all these things, there are still many people who hesitate to use biodiesel. This is because of the fact that it is still more expensive that the traditional petroleum – based diesel fuel. Aside from that, it is not yet available in many regions and locals. This is because most of the fuel providers are still hesitating on producing this alternative fuel on a much larger scale. Still people are encouraged to try it or even do their own biodiesel conversion for it can prove to be of great help in the years to come.
